UEFA starts action against Dortmund and Galatasaray after UCL trouble

UEFA has begun disciplinary proceedings against Borussia Dortmund and Galatasaray after violence at Tuesday's Champions League match at the Westfalenstadion.

Dortmund's 4-1 victory was overshadowed by trouble among the travelling Galatasaray fans in the second half, with the game twice close to being abandoned as flares and other objects were thrown onto the pitch and into adjacent areas of the stadium.

On Thursday, UEFA announced on its website that proceedings had been opened against both clubs. Dortmund have been charged with "crowd disturbances" and "insufficient organisation" and Galatasaray with "crowd disturbances," "pitch invasions by supporters" and "setting off/throwing of fireworks and missiles."

The case is due to be heard on Nov. 13.

On Wednesday, Dortmund police announced that they were investigating a case of attempted manslaughter when a 3.6 kg seat construction was thrown from the upper tier into the lower tier.

The game saw a total of 21 people arrested, with police shutting off the away end to check the identification papers of 700 Galatsaray fans.

Borussia Dortmund head of organisation Christian Hockenjos said the club were "extremely shocked" by the incidents, especially "given that the deeds were committed without any respect for the physical integrity of other people."

He said 10 people inside the stadium had suffered injuries but denied that the club's organisation had been insufficient, saying they had no chance of controlling every single supporter in a group of over 1,000 Galatsaray fans.

This season, Galatasaray have been fined 50,000 euros for crowd violence during a match at Arsenal, but charges of insufficient organisation against the Premier League club were dropped.
