Arsenal 'tactically clueless' vs. Anderlecht, says ex-Gunner Merson

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has slammed the Gunners after they threw away a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Anderlecht at the Emirates on Tuesday night.

Arsene Wenger's side went 3-0 up with goals from Mikel Arteta (from the penalty spot), Alexis Sanchez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain before the hour mark, but then capitulated in the final half-hour to end up with a disappointing draw against the Belgian side.

Pundits across the country have hit out at the Gunners' defending, but Merson did not hold back when asked for his thoughts on Wenger's men on Sky Sports, saying: "I think they are tactically clueless, that's an honest opinion.

"This is not the first time it's happened, it's happened a lot. It's absolutely clueless. For me the manager has to get a message on, but these are international footballers, they are not little kids.

"They play for their countries, in World Cups, in the Premier League, and they are all bombing forward. Surely something in your head, if you know football, you say let's stop here, let's have two banks of four, leave two up front and let them us break us down. It's clueless as football knowledge."

Former Gunner Ian Wright also had his say on Twitter:

Meanwhile, The Daily Telegraph went with the headline 'Blown It' as Liverpool's defeat to Real Madrid took second billing.
