Thiago Silva: I almost left Paris Saint-Germain when Leonardo quit

Thiago Silva has said he considered leaving the French champions when sporting director Leonardo departed last summer, but now hopes to extend his contract.

Along with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the 30-year-old Brazil international was PSG's major summer signing when he arrived from AC Milan in 2012 -- with Leonardo playing a major part in that move.

But Leonardo left the Parc des Princes in 2013 after being banned for a year for barging into a referee, and RMC reported Silva as saying: "I found his suspension unfair, but he told me to stay. Nasser [Al Khelaifi, the PSG president] too."

Silva has a close relationship with Al Khelaifi and said: "When Leonardo left, I also thought about leaving. I told him that. He replied: 'No, the project continues growing. You have to stay here. You are my captain.' I said to him: 'OK, I'll stay because I'm very proud of you.'"

The defender, who signed a five-year deal when he arrived, was thought to have been keen to return to Milan, but he explained: "I didn't say that I wanted to finish my career in Milan, but that I wanted to go back there to play for a few months.

"In my head, I am thinking of finishing at Fluminense, in Rio [where he began his career in 1999]. I don't know what the future will bring. When my contract with PSG finishes, that's when it'll be time to think about that."

Silva added that he would be holding negotiations about extending his contract, saying: "I hope so. We're going to talk with the club, with Nasser.

"Today, I'm good here. It's really different to last year, when I didn't speak French. People didn't understand me. Today, I speak better. That changes everything."

However, as he looked ahead to Sunday's big match against Ligue 1 leaders Marseille, he said he was not optimistic that Ibrahimovic would have recovered from injury in time to play.

The Sweden captain has been sidelined with a heel problem for more than a month, and Silva said: "It's difficult to play without him because he's a player who decides games. I don't think it'll be possible for him to play on Sunday.

"We miss him, because he's a quality player and also a character."
