Steven Gerrard would not join another English club - Jamie Carragher

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has said he does not believe skipper Steven Gerrard would move to another English club.

Gerrard -- whose Liverpool contract deal expires next June -- has raised the possibility of leaving, with no new contract having so far been offered to him.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has said he would consider a move to bring Gerrard to the Premier League champions should he leave Anfield, and he has also been linked with a move to MLS side New York Cosmos.

But Carragher -- who, like Gerrard, is a Merseysider and came up through the Anfield ranks -- said he did not believe Liverpool fans would forgive him if he switched to a Premier League rival.

He told Sky Sports in quotes reported by the Daily Mail: "I don't think they would -- but I don't think Steven Gerrard would move to another [English] club.

"He's a local lad and, if he moved on, I think it would be abroad -- maybe to the States or Europe."

However, he added that he believed Liverpool would resolve Gerrard's contract situation, adding: "I think they will get it all sorted out in the next couple of weeks."

In previous years, Gerrard has been strongly linked with moves to both Chelsea and Real Madrid but stayed at Anfield.

Last week, he said: "I won't be retiring this summer. I will play beyond this season. We will have to wait and see if that's at Liverpool or somewhere else. That's Liverpool's decision."

Those comments sparked interest from Pellegrini, who said: "I don't ever rate players on their age. It depends on the money they cost and the number of years they have [on their contract] but, like Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard is a top player and he can continue at a high level for a couple more years."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who described Gerrard as "a unique talent," said the former England midfielder could be rested for Tuesday night's Champions League game at Real Madrid.
