Newcastle United's Jonas Gutierrez gets all-clear after cancer battle

Newcastle United midfielder Jonas Gutierrez has been discharged from hospital in his native Argentina after an 18-month battle against testicular cancer.

Gutierrez, 31, had a tumour discovered in May 2013 and had surgery in October of that year. After making just six appearances last term for Newcastle and Norwich City during a loan spell at the Canaries, he returned to his homeland to undergo chemotherapy.

On Monday evening the player who has played for Argentina 22 times tweeted to confirm the treatment has been a success.

"I got the all clear. Thank you very much to all those who stood by me in this moment," he tweeted.

Gutierrez's most recent public appearance was when he ran the Buenos Aires marathon last month.

The former Velez Sarsfield and Real Mallorca player, totally bald following his treatment, ran to raise money for cancer research.

Newcastle welcomed the news with a tweet using the hashtag "#UnitedwithJonas."

Gutierrez joined Newcastle from Real Mallorca in July 2008 and became a fans' favourite when he played a starring role in helping the club win the Championship in his second season in the North-East.

However, he was largely unused by manager Alan Pardew last season and was allowed to join Norwich on loan for the second half of the campaign, where he made his last league appearance in the Canaries' 1-0 defeat to West Brom in April.
