Marouane Fellaini: Media invented Sergio Aguero derby spit story

Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini has criticised the media after responding to allegations that he spat on Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero during Sunday's 1-0 derby defeat.

Fellaini was pictured bending over Aguero after a challenge when the striker felt he was fouled in the penalty box by the Belgium international, and appeared to spit at him.

Louis van Gaal denied Fellaini was guilty of the accusation after the game at the Etihad, and Fellaini posted a message on Twitter on Monday afternoon defending himself.

The United manager said in his postmatch news conference: "I have heard that it is a question on social media but already the TV has shown that he is shouting and sometimes when you shout there's a little bit of saliva [that comes out] with it. I don't think that he's a spitting figure."

Fellaini went unpunished after he was accused of spitting at City right-back Pablo Zabaleta in last season's derby at Old Trafford.

City manager Manuel Pellegrini did not escalate the issue, adding: "It's something I don't know about."
