Man Utd keeper David De Gea: I am playing the best football of my career

David De Gea believes he is in the finest form of his career, despite Manchester United's struggles.

The Spaniard made a series of fine saves to deny Jesus Navas and Sergio Aguero in Sunday's Manchester derby before the Argentina international eventually scored the only goal of the game to condemn United to defeat.

Goalkeeper De Gea, who was singled out for praise by manager Louis van Gaal after producing outstanding late stops in October's 2-1 win against Everton, was named United's player of the season last year but thinks he is playing better now.

He said: "My form is very good. I am playing the best football of my career and I want it to continue, but the most important thing is that we all play well as a team.

"It was a shame we didn't get anything from the match. But we had 10 men for most of the match. We didn't give up after the red card. We kept going.

"We don't like to lose, especially in derbies, but we will keep doing what we are doing and try to win the matches coming up."

Meanwhile, Juan Mata, who was an unused substitute, wrote in his blog: "A derby is always special and the one in Manchester is really intense, you can feel it in the streets during the week. That's why it's hard to accept that we have lost and, despite not being able to help my teammates on the pitch, I can tell you that the whole team is very upset.

"Playing away against City is always challenging because they have big offensive potential, as it was shown, but having one player sent off in the first half just makes things more complicated. This is the fifth time this season that one of us has got a red card, so unfortunately we already know what it means to have one player less.

"But even though Sergio Aguero scored and we were down to 10 men, our team showed pride and almost tied the game, although this time it was not possible."
