Terrence Boyd has returned to action with a match-winning goal in the German Cup for his side RB Leipzig. The U.S. attacker had been ruled out with a major knee injury in recent months.

The Bremen-born Boyd opened his German account on Wednesday by netting the late insurance tally for RB Leipzig in a 3-1 overtime triumph against DfB-Pokal second round visitors Erzgebirge Aue.

Boyd, 23, joined German second tier club RB Leipzig from Austrian Bundesliga side Rapid Vienna, where he had scored 37 goals in 80 appearances and also made his Europa League debut, ahead of the 2014-2015 season.

In preseason, during a friendly against Queens Park Rangers, Boyd suffered a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament.

"He was the 'marquee signing' of the ambitions second league club RB Leipzig, and has all the makings for a great striker and was set coin the second division," German football magazine kicker said at the time of Boyd's injury.

The U.S. national team attacker, who was cut from the final World Cup squad by Jurgen Klinsmann in May, returned to action in mid-October when he came off the bench in one of Leipzig's rare defeats, a 1-0 loss at 1.FC Nurnberg.

After another short appearance in the 2-0 home victory against VfL Bochum last weekend, Boyd opened his Leipzig account with the match-winner that ended the cup tie against league rivals Erzgebirge Aue on Wednesday.

Denmark international Yussuf Poulsen, 20, had earlier secured extra time for Leipzig, when he levelled the score in the first minute of injury time.

"Following Yussuf's equalizer we knew that we'd turn the match around in extra time. You have a mental advantage when you someone get in the equalizer," Boyd said in a postmatch interview with the club TV.

"I feel great. I've been through a long period of suffering," Boyd added. "I wanted to show everyone what I have in me. Every goal, and every victory helps."
