Wolfsburg have entered contract talks with Ricardo Rodriguez after rejecting a summer approach from Manchester United for the defender, his agent has told kicker.
Rodriguez, 22, is one of the most in-demand left-backs in Europe following an outstanding 2013-14 season for Wolfsburg and good performances at the World Cup for Switzerland.
The defender -- who has been praised as "the best left-back in Bundesliga" by his coach Dieter Hecking -- is under contract with Die Wolfe until 2016, and the club have wanted to prolong his deal for a long time.
Bayern Munich and United have reportedly scouted Rodriguez on various occasions, with the player's agent Roger Wittmann confirming that Wolfsburg refused to discuss a transfer with the Premier League club this summer.
This Tuesday, contract talks between Wolfsburg officials and Wittmann began when the two sides met at Frankfurt Airport.
"We've been discussing the start of it for a year now," he told kicker.
Earlier this month, Wittmann told Bild that they are currently not thinking about a renewed deal -- but his stance has changed over the past few weeks, saying: "Of course, we will listen to them. They are Ricardo's club."
According to kicker, Wolfsburg are willing to give Rodriguez a substantial pay rise, and have also not rejected inserting a release clause in the Switzerland international's contract -- a must for the player.
United reportedly knocked on Wittmann's door this summer regarding Rodriguez, but were told that Wolfsburg have no plans to sell the player until at least 2016.
"We were told that Ricardo is not for sale. And that was that," the agent said of United's interest and his talks with the Bundesliga side.
