Everton's Roberto Martinez rules out signings to cover John Stones injury

LIVERPOOL -- Everton boss Roberto Martinez has ruled out a January move for defensive reinforcements despite a long-term injury to John Stones.

The England international is likely to be out until the New Year after being carried off on a stretcher with an ankle injury during the 2-1 Premier League defeat at Manchester United on Oct. 5.

But even without the 20-year-old, Martinez feels he has enough depth in the central defensive positions to see him through.

Asked if he might try to buy a centre-back in January, Martinez said: "No. As you can see, we've been performing really, really well defensively.

"The centre-half position is an area in which we are strong, with Phil Jagielka, Antolin Alcaraz, Sylvain Distin and Tyias Browning.

"I'm very happy with what we've got. We're making sure that we get John fit and ready for the second half of the season, which is not too far away."

Martinez expects midfielder Darron Gibson to be fit for Saturday's home match against Swansea despite an injury scare.

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill told the Irish Independent that he felt Gibson was a doubt for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Scotland in Glasgow on Nov. 14 after jarring his knee in training.

Martinez said: "Yesterday in training, he picked up a knock, but I don't think you can consider it an injury. We'll assess it today. I expect him to train today, so I don't think there's anything to worry about."

Everton's manager is also confident that striker Romelu Lukaku will be able to face the Swans even though he limped off with a toe injury during last Sunday's 3-1 win at Burnley.

The Belgium international -- who scored in the victory -- has been troubled by the injury all season, but has managed to play through it so far.

Martinez said: "He's OK. He had a really painful knock, and in the moment that he scored, he had a couple of painful knocks in the same area.

"But he's been fine. He's been training well, and I just feel it's not going to stop him being fully fit for the next few games before the international break."

Martinez believes that Lukaku is benefiting from playing alongside former Cameroon international Samuel Eto'o, signed as a free agent in August after being released by Chelsea.

Eto'o scored twice in an outstanding display at Burnley, starting in a deep attacking position before moving in the centre-forward's role after Lukaku went off.

Martinez said: "To have Samuel Eto'o at our club is like a gift from the footballing gods. To have someone of his experience is a perfect ingredient for our young players.

"Samuel's performance on Sunday was of a really high standard, but so has everything he has done for the club so far. I'm really excited about seeing how well Samuel can adapt to the second half of the season, and finish really strongly.

"His experience and know-how have already been really important during the European games. But I thought the finishes against Burnley were reminiscent of the best of Samuel Eto'o. It was a real gift."
