Buriram United regain lead over Chonburi in Thai league title race

The lead has once again exchanged hands in the home stretch of the Thai Premier League.

With the last fixture round of the league coming up on Nov. 2, defending champions Buriram United now have destiny in their own hands. Buriram, who are one point ahead of second-placed Chonburi FC, will host Police United on Nov. 2 knowing that a win will see them through to their second consecutive league triumph.

Chonburi who won the league in 2007, will host TOT Sports Club on the same day. The second-placed club will be hoping for a win and also for Buriram to drop points in their last game. Chonburi will rue a lost opportunity should that not happen. They had a one-point advantage over Buriram going into the mid-week round of fixtures on Wednesday. But, Chonburi allowed this to slip away by drawing 1-1 away to Chainat FC on the same day that Buriram claimed maximum points at TOT SC winning 2-0.

Buriram striker Javier Patino, who plays for the Philippines national team, opened the scoring in the 9th minute. Spanish attacking midfielder Carmelo Gonzalez scored Buriram's second in the 73rd minute to take the club top of the table once again after trailing Chonburi for a couple of weeks. TOT was reduced to ten men when attacking midfielder Noppol Pol was sent off six minutes before Gonzalez scored.

Chonburi forward Nurul Sriyankem gave his team the lead in the 67th minute against Chainat. However, Jitpanya Tisut scored the equalizer four minutes later to dash Chonburi's hopes of going into the last game as league leaders.

Third-placed Muangthong United, who were docked nine points for crowd violence earlier this week, won 2-0 at Osotspa Saraburi FC. Fourth-placed BEC Tero Sasa hosted PTT Rayong FC and won 2-1.
