Swansea confirm appeal against Federico Fernandez red card vs. Reds

Swansea have appealed against defender Federico Fernandez's red card in Tuesday night's 2-1 Capital One Cup defeat to Liverpool.

Fernandez was dismissed by referee Keith Stroud in stoppage time for a challenge on Philippe Coutinho and faces a three-match suspension.

However, a statement issued on the Swans' official website read: "Swansea City can confirm that the club will be appealing the red card issued to defender Federico Fernandez against Liverpool last night.

"The club officially informed the Football Association by Wednesday's 1 p.m. [GMT] deadline. The FA will make a decision on the appeal ahead of Saturday's Premier League trip to Everton.''

Swansea had led through Marvin Emnes' goal but Mario Balotelli equalised and, after Fernandez was dismissed, Dejan Lovren's header snatched the win to send the Reds through to the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, the wife of Swansea manager Garry Monk has reacted angrily after a letter was apparently hand delivered to the couple's family home criticising his performance at the Liberty Stadium.

Lexy Blackwell, who gave birth to twin boys in March, took to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon to claim she had received the letter from a neighbour.

Monk, who was handed his first managerial job when he took over at Swansea earlier this year after 10 years playing for the club, was named Premier League Manager of the Month for August and has guided the team to sixth in the table with 14 points from nine games.
