Enrique Cerezo blasts La Liga awards; Cristiano Ronaldo defends haul

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo reiterated on Tuesday that his players deserved more La Liga awards but Real Madrid big winner Cristiano Ronaldo said the distribution was fair.

"I am not surprised that Madrid took home more awards than Atleti. I congratulate them because they had a very good season," Ronaldo told Marca.

Real Madrid dominated the list of winners as the Spanish Football League (LFP) awards were handed out a gala in the Spanish capital on Monday night, with reigning Liga champions Atletico only claiming one prize.

Ronaldo was the evening's big individual winner, taking home the trophies for best forward, best overall player and best goal.

Atletico had six nominees across all player categories (Thibaut Courtois -- on loan from Chelsea -- Felipe Luis, Miranda, Gabi, Koke and Diego Costa) and did not receive one trophy.

Collecting his award for best coach, Atleti's Diego Simeone pointedly named his players in his acceptance speech, saying: "I want to share this with my technical team and also with my players: Courtois, Miranda, Gabi, Koke..."

Cerezo echoed Simeone's praise for his players and blasted the selection process.

"I have nothing against the winners, but if we want these awards to have importance, we must change the system. We are talking about what is considered to be the best league in the world," Cerezo told Marca.

Cerezo added that the Ballon d'Or selection process is transparent, but "in the case of La Liga, voting is confidential."

Cerezo said Real Madrid president Florentino Perez had no power in the selection process.

"I don't think Florentino had anything to do with it," Cerezo said.
