Alex: David Luiz and Thiago Silva can be ideal partnership for PSG

Former Paris Saint-Germain defender Alex has said the club's decision to pair David Luiz and Thiago Silva in central defence is "an excellent idea."

Luiz, 27, joined the French champions from Chelsea in a 50 million-euro summer switch, but a thigh injury to Brazil colleague Silva means they have played only two matches in a club partnership.

Those games brought clean sheets and victories and, speaking to Canal+, Alex said: "The Parisians want to win the Champions League -- and I think to pair David Luiz and Thiago Silva, the defenders of the Brazil national team, is an excellent idea."

Luiz and Silva, 30, suffered a torrid time in the latter stages of the World Cup as host nation Brazil crashed 7-1 to Germany in the semifinals before Netherlands beat them 3-0 in the third place playoff, but Alex said he believed they would prove a formidable force at the Parc des Princes.

The defender added that he would have liked to still be playing for the club himself, having left when his contract expired at the end of the season.

He moved to AC Milan, but explained: "I would have liked to have extended my contract by a year, but I think there was a lack of will on the part of the club.

"We spoke about it for a week and then I heard nothing for a long time. It was a very difficult situation for me."
