Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago had successful knee surgery in Spain, the Bundesliga champions confirmed on Thursday.

The 23-year-old has been out of action for seven months after tearing ligaments in his right knee and he suffered a setback in training last week, with the latest round of surgery set to sideline him for another half a year.

The Spain international preferred to be treated in his home country and he went under the knife on Thursday.

Dr. Roman Cuga performed the operation in Barcelona in the presence of a member of Bayern's own medical team, Dr. Lutz Hansel.

A statement on the Bavarian club's website read: "The operation on his right knee was successful. There were no complications. Nevertheless, the player will not be available for the coming months.''
