Bastian Schweinsteiger trains with ball but Bayern Munich uncertain on return

Bayern Munich have confirmed that Bastian Schweinsteiger has stepped up his recovery from injury despite a report in Sport Bild claiming the club's doctor believes he may need further knee surgery.

Schweinsteiger has yet to feature in a competitive match for club or country this season due to knee tendon problems, with his only appearance since helping Germany to victory over Argentina in the World Cup final coming in a preseason friendly against the MLS All-Stars.

On Tuesday, he resumed training with the ball, with the club's official website reporting that he "dribbled round cones, practised passing and delivered shots at small-size goals."

However, there is still no clear indication of when he is likely to return to action.

Sport Bild claimed on Wednesday that Bayern club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt had recently been considering sending the midfielder to the United States for an operation but that the player had indicated that he wanted to attempt to make his return.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the German sport magazine that the club "currently can't foresee a return" to full training, adding: "That's why we can't say when he will play again."
