Kolo Toure travel to African Nations Cup up to Liverpool medical staff

LIVERPOOL -- Liverpool's medical staff will have the key say on whether Kolo Toure can travel to the African Nations Cup amid concerns over the Ebola virus, manager Brendan Rodgers said.

Toure is expected to make the Ivory Coast squad for the tournament, scheduled to be held in January.

However, scheduled hosts Morocco have asked the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the tournament organisers, to postpone the tournament amid fears over the spread of Ebola.

CAF has said that the ANC dates will not be changed, and have reportedly approached Ghana and South Africa about hosting it instead.

Morocco feels large groups of football supporters and other travelers from West Africa -- where Ebola has killed more than 4,500 people in its worst outbreak ever -- would put it at risk.

The Morocco health ministry's appeal for a postponement came following its decision "to avoid events which involve those countries affected by the Ebola virus."

Asked if centre-back Toure, 31, would be allowed to play at the ANC, Rodgers said: "It's something my medical team will look at. The welfare of the player is paramount in it all, and if we felt there was something that would ensure that was looked after, we would look at it.

"But that's a medical issue that we'll address when the time comes."

Rodgers has indicated that Toure's fellow centre-back, Dejan Lovren, will be fit for Sunday's Premier League trip to QPR after recovering from an abdominal injury.

The injury forced Lovren to pull out of Croatia's Euro 2016 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Azerbaijan during the latest international break. "He will hopefully be fine for the weekend," Rodgers said.

Joe Allen is ready to return from a knee problem sustained during Wales' 2-1 Euro 2016 qualifier in Andorra on Sept. 9, while fellow midfielder Emre Can is over the ankle injury suffered as Germany beat Romania 8-0 in an Under-21 match on the same night.

Striker Daniel Sturridge, who has not played since suffering a thigh injury during an England training session on Sept. 5, will be assessed on Friday before a decision is taken on whether he is ready to make his comeback.

"We'll have to see tomorrow how Dan is. Thankfully, a number of our other injured players are back," Rodgers said.

"Joe Allen has been looking really well in training. Emre Can is back in, Glen Johnson is back in. So that side is looking healthy.

"With Dan, we just need to see by tomorrow where he's at, and then we'll take it from there."
