Manchester United injury problems easing ahead of West Brom trip

Manchester United are waiting to see if eight of their injured players will be fit enough to feature in Monday's game at West Bromwich Albion.

Antonio Valencia, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Michael Carrick, Ashley Young, Jonny Evans, Jesse Lingard and Anderson have all been sidelined in recent weeks, but the former Premier League champions' injury problems are easing.

Midfielder Carrick is yet to feature this season after undergoing ankle surgery in July but returned to training more than two weeks ago and could make his first appearance under Louis van Gaal.

Centre-back Jones has been out for a month after suffering a hamstring injury on international duty with England but is another who was back in training before the 2-1 win over Everton.

Fellow defender Smalling also missed that game with a thigh problem, while winger Young has been missing because of a groin injury.

Evans is perhaps less likely to be fit to make his comeback against Albion, although he has had a protective boot removed from his foot.

Valencia came off in the Everton game with a hamstring injury while Lingard, who began the season in the side, has not featured since the opening-day defeat to Swansea because of a knee injury.

However, teenage centre-back Paddy McNair is expected to miss the trip to The Hawthorns with a hamstring injury and the game may come too soon for summer signing Ander Herrera, who has a cracked rib.

Meanwhile, United's players are reportedly sleeping in oxygen pods in between training sessions in an attempt to ensure they recover from injuries quicker.

Van Gaal has described the club's injury crisis as the worst he has encountered during his 23-year managerial career and has taken a number of measures to try and get more of his players fit.
