Andre Schurrle withdraws from Germany-Ireland qualifier with flu

Chelsea midfielder Andre Schurrle has become the latest Germany player to pull out of Tuesday's 2016 European Championship qualifier against Republic of Ireland.

Schurrle, who played 78 minutes of the weekend's 2-0 defeat in Poland, left the Germany team hotel in Essen on Tuesday as the problems facing the Nationalmannschaft continued to grow.

"Andre Schurrle has pulled out of the Ireland match with flu," the German FA (DFB) announced on its official website. "On Monday, midfielder Christoph Kramer also pulled out with a flu."

Germany coach Joachim Low -- whose defeat in Poland was their first in a qualifier since 2007 -- is already without the injured Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mesut Ozil, Sami Khedira and Benedikt Howedes.

Marco Reus and Mario Gomez, who missed the World Cup through injury, also remain sidelined and sit out the clash, meaning Low will only have 14 outfield players available for selection.

Schurrle will arrive back in London just ahead of his fellow Chelsea internationals as the Premier League leaders prepare to travel to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

They then host Maribor in the Champions League on Tuesday, six days before a trip to Old Trafford to play Manchester United.
