Striker Dennis Rommedahl announces retirement from Denmark squad

Denmark striker Dennis Rommedahl says he is retiring from the national team after scoring 21 goals in 126 matches over a 13-year career.

Rommedahl ends his career three games short of the countries record holder for caps, retired goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel.

The 36-year-old Rommedahl says he "hadn't really thought" of beating Schmeichel's record "but it would have been great."

Rommedahl, who was voted player of the year in 2007 and 2010, has played for Dutch clubs PSV Eindhoven, Ajax and Nijmegen, but also Charlton Athletic and Olympiakos.

The striker had been away from the national side for the past 15 months because of an Achilles injury.
