U.S. adds Chris Wondolowski to roster; Landon Donovan to be captain

San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski had been added to the United States roster for Friday night's friendly against Ecuador in East Hartford, Connecticut.

Wondolowski, a member of this year's U.S. World Cup team, was scheduled to arrive on Tuesday night and will miss San Jose's MLS game at Portland on Wednesday.

The striker returns to the Yanks in their first match on American soil since the World Cup, when Wondolowski took criticism for failing to convert a late opportunity to grab a crucial goal in the U.S.'s round-of-16 defeat to Belgium.

Also on Tuesday, U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said Landon Donovan will captain the U.S. in his national team finale.

Klinsmann said the 32-year-old Los Angeles Galaxy forward will start and play about 30 minutes.

Donovan, who is retiring at the end of Major League Soccer's season, is the American leader with 57 goals and 58 assists. It will be the 157th international appearance for Donovan, a veteran of three World Cups who was controversially dropped by Klinsmann for this year's tournament in Brazil.

The revised roster:

Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa, England), Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Nick Rimando (Salt Lake)

Defenders: John Brooks (Hertha Berlin, Germany), Timmy Chandler (Eintracht Frankfurt, Germany), Greg Garza (Tijuana, Mexico), Omar Gonzalez (Los Angeles), Michael Orozco (Puebla, Mexico), Tim Ream (Bolton, England), DeAndre Yedlin (Seattle)
