Italian Super Cup between Juventus and Napoli to be staged in Qatar

Serie A champions Juventus will take on Coppa Italia victors Napoli in the Italian Super Cup in Doha, Qatar on Dec. 22, the Lega Serie A announced on Monday.

It marks the seventh time that the event will be staged abroad, following Washington in 1993, Tripoli, Libya in 2002, New York in 2003 and Beijing on three occasions -- 2009, 2011 and 2012.

However, it is the first time that the tie will be played in December, having previously been pencilled in as an annual showpiece event in August -- the reason for this being that Rafael Benitez wanted his side to focus on their Champions League qualifier against Athletic Bilbao, which they ultimately lost 4-2 on aggregate.

"We are grateful for the opportunity to export our TIM Supercup in such an interesting and prestigious country as Qatar,'' Lega Serie A president Maurizio Beretta told a press conference on Monday.

Juventus have won the trophy a record six times -- alongside AC Milan -- and have emerged victorious on the previous two editions, beating Napoli 4-2 in Beijing in 2012 before defending their title last year against Lazio, winning 4-0 in Rome.

Napoli, on the other hand, have won the Italian Super Cup just once, in 1990, when they defeated Juventus 5-1.
