Michel Platini hands $25,000 World Cup gift watch in to FIFA

UEFA president Michel Platini has handed in a $25,000 watch given to him at the World Cup to FIFA, UEFA media director Pedro Pinto has told German paper Die Welt.

Last month, Platini, 59, had said he would not return the watch, which was given to the 25 FIFA executive committee members and the presidents of the football associations by the Brazilian Football Confederation at the World Cup in June.

FIFA, world football's governing body, had told the officials they had until Oct. 24 to hand in the watches or face ethics proceedings for accepting a gift that had more than a "symbolic or trivial value."

Platini had said the giving of such gifts was common practice in the football world, and that he would "give to a charitable organisation, a foundation" the value of the watch.

But last Friday, he returned the watch to a FIFA employee in Zurich, Die Welt confirmed. "The UEFA president likes to think that this case is now settled," Pinto told the paper.
