Premier League review: Man City see off Aston Villa, Liverpool beat Baggies

Manchester City moved up to second with victory against Aston Villa, while Liverpool beat West Brom to get back on track in the Premier League.

Man City left it late to secure a 2-0 win against Villa at Villa Park, with Manuel Pellegrini's side needing two goals in the last 10 minutes from Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero.

Despite chances for both sides, the match looked as if it could end up as a stalemate, before Toure found the bottom corner in the 82nd minute with a well-placed strike from the edge of the area.

Aguero then made sure of the points in the 88th minute, firing an effort home from outside the box to leave City two points off leaders Chelsea, who entertain Arsenal on Sunday.

Liverpool put their recent poor form behind them with a 2-1 victory against West Brom after Brendan Rodgers dropped Mario Balotelli from the starting XI in favour of Rickie Lambert.

Jordan Henderson handed the Reds their first Premier League win in four matches after West Brom threatened to frustrate Brendan Rodgers' men at Anfield. The England midfielder latched onto Raheem Sterling's pass to set the Reds en route to their 2-1 victory, cancelling out Saido Berahino's penalty equaliser.

Adam Lallana fired his first Liverpool goal to the put the hosts in front, only for Dejan Lovren to fell Berahino in his own box. The England under-21 striker blasted home his sixth goal of the season in all competitions, his fourth in three games following a brace against Burnley.

Former Sunderland man Henderson spared Liverpool's blushes six minutes later though, to end a run of four games without a win in all competitions.

Papiss Cisse scored twice for Newcastle to possibly save Alan Pardew's job for now as the Magpies held on to hold high-flying Swansea to a 2-2 draw at the Liberty stadium.

Cisse's second brace of goals in three matches this season was enough to see the Magpies claw their way to a creditable 2-2 draw at Swansea, but the Tynesiders are still hunting their first league victory of the campaign.

Wilfried Bony put the hosts ahead with his first goal of the term, before Gabriel Obertan teed up Cisse to level just before half-time.

Gylfi Sigurdsson set up Wayne Routledge to put Swansea back in front after the restart, only for Cisse to level again, this time Sammy Ameobi providing the assist.

Connor Wickham netted an early goal, then Steven Fletcher hit a brace after Charlie Adam scored to hand Sunderland a 3-1 win over Stoke.

Fletcher's first goals of 2014 belatedly handed Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet an opening Premier League victory of the season at the seventh attempt.

The Scotland international, who last found the back of the net in a league game at Cardiff on Dec. 28, headed home Jordi Gomez's cross after setting up Conor Wickham for his fifth-minute opener, and then wrapped up a 3-1 win with a second 11 minutes from time.

Ross Wallace's last-gasp free-kick earned Burnley a 2-2 draw with Leicester at the King Power Stadium.

The hosts were heading for victory thanks to goals from Jeff Schlupp and Riyad Mahrez, but Wallace fired a leveller on the stroke of full-time to steal a point for Burnley.

The hosts took the lead with Schlupp firing his first Premier League goal before Michael Kightly equalised. Leicester hit back just a minute later though, with Mahrez heading home, only for Wallace to level again at the death.

Hull saw off in-form Crystal Palace with a 2-0 home victory, Mohamed Diame opening the scoring after Andrew Robertson's cross. Nikica Jelavic killed the game off in the closing stages, with Jake Livermore providing the assist.
