Thierry Henry will not return next year to NY Red Bulls, says Gerard Houllier

Thierry Henry is playing in his final season in New York, according to Red Bull head of global football Gerard Houllier.

Henry's contract expires after this season, and the 37-year-old has yet to say whether he plans to retire or try to play in another country when his time in MLS ends.

However, Red Bull boss Houllier said Henry will not extend his current deal.

"He planned to put an end to his career, it is possible that these could be his final matches," Houllier told francefootball.fr. "It may be that the urge will tickle him and that he will retire somewhere else, but it will not be with the Red Bulls."

In the wake of Landon Donovan's retirement announcement in August, Henry said he felt like he could still play.

"We'll see," he said when asked what his future holds. "I still feel fresh, somehow, after a lot of games in my career. But I'm okay still so far."

An SI.com report earlier this week said a possible reason for Henry's departure was that Red Bull was shifting resources away from New York and toward its teams in Europe, but MLS commissioner Don Garber confirmed on Thursday that the New York club is not up for sale.

"I can absolutely assure you that the New York Red Bulls are not for sale," Garber said. "Both the owner and the management team in Austria and in New York are as committed as ever to Major League Soccer, the club and their fans."
