Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone expects forwards to find form

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone says he is confident that his all new-look attack will soon click.

Defending league champions Atletico have scored just seven goals in the first five games of the new campaign, and six of these have come from set-pieces, with centre-half Miranda the team's current top-scorer on three.

Meanwhile, former Atletico centre-forward Diego Costa has been in rampaging form with new club Chelsea, matching his former side's entire goals tally alone in his first five Premier League games.

On Saturday, Atletico face a La Liga clash against Sevilla at the Estadio Vicente Calderon, and Simeone told his pregame news conference that he was not surprised that his team were not yet firing up front, given new attackers Mario Mandzukic, Antoine Griezmann, Raul Jimenez and Alessio Cerci were always going to need time to bed in.

"It is what I imaged given the changes in the characteristics of the players," Simeone said. "We are in a period of fitting in the new arrivals in the best way. After Mandzukic's injury there was less possibilities for combinations to be created."

Former Bayern Munich centre-forward Mandzukic could return against Sevilla, wearing a facial mask to protect his still healing broken nose, and Simeone said a final decision on whether the Croatia international would come straight back into the XI had not yet been made.

"We will see how he trains now," he said. "Yesterday he trained well, and today we have another training session to decide if we can count on him from the start."

Simeone said he was confident that 30 million-euro France international Griezmann, who has scored just once in nine appearances for club and country this campaign, would eventually settle at a club as big as Atletico.

"[Griezmann] is a very important player for us," he said. "We need him at his best. I believe that players when they have more consistency become more important to the team. We need to have consistency in our play.

"Griezmann scores goals, he can run in behind, he can beat his man, he can play in different positions. It is a normal period for a young kid. With all my respect, it is not the same to play at Atletico Madrid than at Real [Sociedad], the demands are different."

Simeone returns to the bench for the first time since he was punished with an eight-game ban (four in La Liga) for slapping the fourth official during August's Spanish Supercopa win over Real Madrid. He said there were similarities between his own team and a Sevilla side which are also physical in defence and efficient from dead-ball situations.

"Both teams prepare well for set-pieces," Simeone said. "We are both dangerous from these situations. Over time with [coach Unai] Emery their team has become more competitive with their aggression and pace in attack.

"They have important players in different positions and that makes them very competitive. Emery's work is very good, as he tends to do with teams when he has time with them. Tomorrow will be an important game between two teams who play in a similar way in many situations."
