Artificial pitches get green light in England for League One and Two

Artificial pitches are set to be allowed in League One and League Two following widespread support from club chairmen.

A final vote is to be taken in November but a clear majority of clubs backed the move at a meeting on Thursday.

Championship clubs have voted against allowing the 3G pitches in their competition but have indicated they are willing to play on artificial turf in cup competitions -- as have Premier League clubs.

The Football League will draw up regulations surrounding installing and using the pitches -- which will cost between 300,000 pounds and 500,000 pounds to install - ahead of November's vote.

Bradford chairman Mark Lawn backed the move to allow the artificial pitches but said the club would think very carefully before getting rid of their grass surface.

He told PA Sport: "We think the quality is good enough now -- Russia play international matches on it and even England have done so.

"But it needs very careful calculations -- it may still cost you the same as to maintain as a grass pitch, you have to be very sure about the projected income and it may only have a lifespan of 20 years.''
