Frank Lampard coy about Manchester City stay

Frank Lampard suggested it is not up to him whether his loan deal at Manchester City is extended.

The veteran midfielder, who signed for New York City FC before being loaned to the Premier League champions, has scored three goals in his last two games at the Etihad Stadium.

He is due to return to America in January to prepare for New York's maiden MLS season, which begins in March and the American club's head coach Jason Kreis said there was "no truth" to stories Lampard would remain in England for longer.

But his fine form has prompted talk that City, who are set to lose midfielder Yaya Toure to the African Nations Cup in January, could stay on for another couple of months or even the entire season and manager Manuel Pellegrini has said he is open to the possibility of keeping the 36-year-old for a greater period.

But Lampard indicated such a decision would be up to the clubs, saying: "I'm contracted until the start of January and that's how it is.

"That argument's come up since I scored at the weekend. I think the important thing for me is to play well if I can, train well and then we'll see what happens. I'm signed here until January so that's all I can say at the minute."

Despite Kreis' comments, it is looking more likely that Lampard will remain in Manchester until February while there is the possibility that the former Chelsea player, who scored twice in the 7-0 Capital One Cup thrashing of Sheffield Wednesday, could still be available for the competition's final.

"It is a good story, so that's why I can't comment on it," Lampard added. "I honestly don't know. When I signed for Man City on loan six weeks ago it was still January and that's the way it remains.

"I wouldn't want to get too ahead of myself. It's not my place to do that. That will obviously be a club decision first and foremost anyway. I'll just train as hard as I can and play as well as I can."

Lampard said he has recaptured his sharpness after his surprise move to City, explaining: "It's a funny one for me because my intentions were to have a longer holiday and then train maybe on my own with a fitness coach. I was in pure holiday mode when I got the call to come back here.

"I've had a really good preseason now. Considering I wasn't involved in the first few games, that's been extra training time for me. I feel good and I'm just actually really enjoying training and playing. The lads are great, the people behind the scenes have welcomed me, the staff, the manager, Brian Kidd, the people behind the scenes have been brilliant. It's been an easy transition."
