D.C. United advance in CONCACAF Champions League, Red Bulls ousted

Chris Pontius and Eddie Johnson scored as D.C. United beat Panamanian side Tauro FC 2-0 to clinch a spot in the knockout stage of the CONCACAF Champions League.

Pontius headed home Samuel Inkoom's cross in the 49th minute to give D.C. the lead in the 49th minute.

Johnson, playing in his first match in three weeks, extended the advantage four minutes late by slamming the ball off the crossbar and in.

D.C. United still have to travel to Panama in October, but are assured of the top spot in Group 4 and will advance to the quarterfinals.

The New York Red Bulls were eliminated after failing to break through against C.D. Fas in El Salvador in a 0-0 draw.

The draw means the Montreal Impact win Group 3, the tournament's only section with multiple MLS teams.

Mexican club Pachuca defeated Municipal of Guatemala 4-1 to clinch the top spot in Group 1 with a game in hand.

Diego de Buen opened the barrage with a 22nd-minute penalty, while Ariel Nahuelpan, Diego Buonanotte and Jurgen Damm Rascon also scored.

Herediano of Costa Rica stunned Mexican champions Leon 2-1 to win Group 7.
