Sergio Romero: I did not refuse a transfer to Manchester United

Argentina international goalkeeper Sergio Romero has insisted that he did not turn down a move to Manchester United.

The 27-year-old was linked with the former Premier League champions at the end of the summer transfer window but said such stories were "lies."

He told Radio Nacional: "Many lies have been spread, like, for example, that I refused a transfer to Manchester United. To me, something like that is crazy."

Romero helped Argentina to reach the 2014 World Cup final but is yet to feature for Sampdoria this season and is keen to leave the Italian club unless he can displace first-choice goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano.

He spent last season on loan at Monaco, where he was usually on the bench, but retained his place in the Argentina side.

Romero added: "I can't do this for much longer. The same thing happened to me in France -- arriving at a club when the transfer window is nearly closed and having to wait for an opportunity. I am happy at Sampdoria, though, and I will keep showing the coach that I am ready to play and that I don't want to keep sitting on the bench."

United did sign two of Romero's Argentina teammates, Marcos Rojo and Angel Di Maria, in the summer.
