Martinez: Bryan Oviedo, Arouna Kone, may make Everton returns

LIVERPOOL -- Bryan Oviedo and Arouna Kone are in line to make comebacks from long-term injuries when Everton visit Swansea in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday.

Manager Roberto Martinez has indicated that both players could play in the third-round tie in south Wales.

Costa Rica full-back Oviedo, 24, missed the World Cup after breaking his leg during a 4-0 FA Cup fourth-round victory at Stevenage on Jan. 25.

But he played the full 90 minutes as an over-age player for Everton's under-21 side when they lost 2-0 to Chelsea at their Finch Farm training ground on Sep. 14.

Kone, 30, played 80 minutes in the same under-21 match, having been absent since suffering a knee injury last October.

Martinez said: "We've got really good news about Bryan Oviedo being in the squad for the first time since his broken leg.

"Arouna Kone could be involved as well. He's available for selection even though we need to be a bit cautious.

"He's in a situation where he's been training with the group now for a while, and I do think that he's ready for 11-a-side.

"He played a game with the under-21s last week so he is available for selection, but I need to take a decision tomorrow morning on Arouna."

Everton will be without midfielder Steven Pienaar, who has not played for almost a month because of a quad muscle problem, while right-back Seamus Coleman remains absent because of the head injury he sustained during last Thursday's 4-1 Europa League victory over Wolfsburg.

Martinez, meanwhile, has dismissed reports that talks are under way with midfielder James McCarthy over a contract extension.

The 23-year-old signed a long-term deal when he joined Everton from Wigan for 13 million pounds in September 2013.

Martinez suggested towards the end of last season that Everton might look to extend that deal over the summer, but has now declared that new terms are not imminent.

Asked about a new contract for McCarthy, Martinez said: "Well, he has a very, very long-term contract. I don't know where the talk is coming from.

"As you know, James McCarthy arrived at the club 13 months ago. His contract is a long-term one and the ambition of everyone at Everton is to see him here for many, many years on top of that long-term contract that he has.

"It's not an issue at all. There's nothing imminent."

Martinez said that former Manchester City, Derby and Burnley defender Tyrone Mears is training with Everton -- but that there were no plans to sign him.

Mears, 31, is a free agent after being released by Championship club Bolton at the end of last season.

Martinez said: "Tyrone is working just to try to get his fitness up. He's someone who will work with the younger group while making sure that he keeps his fitness levels high until he finds an opportunity."
