Ljungberg, 37, retired from football in August 2012 after a spell at Japanese side Shimizu S-Pulse but has signed a short-term contract with Peter Reid's team to become the latest big name to join the inaugural Indian Super League.

The 75-time capped Swede has been confirmed as one of the club's marquee signings and joins former Arsenal teammate Nicolas Anelka at the club, who also signed a short-term deal following his controversial exit from West Bromwich Albion.

Ljungberg is one of a number of high-profile players to have agreed to play in India, with another former Arsenal teammate in Robert Pires -- as well as Alessandro Del Piero, David Trezeguet and Joan Capdevila -- also ready to test their skills on a new continent.

The winger, famous for his red mohawk, sprung to prominence when he signed for Arsenal from his native Halmstads in 1998, scoring 71 goals in 313 appearances for the Gunners before enjoying less successful stints at West Ham United, Seattle Sounders, Chicago Fire and Celtic.

Mumbai City get their domestic campaign underway away at Atletico De Kolkata on Oct. 12 where Ljungberg will come up against former Liverpool and Barcelona attacker Luis Garcia.
