Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri thrilled with Champions League start

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri was relieved to see his team open their Champions League account with a 2-0 win over Malmo.

The Italian giants created the better chances in Tuesday's encounter in Turin but failed to break the deadlock until the second half.

The pressure finally paid off just before the hour mark when Carlos Tevez put Juve ahead, and the Argentine striker scored his second with a late free kick as the Turin outfit claimed all three points.

"This game was by no means simple,'' Allegri said. "We knew we were facing a very physical team that defends well. In the first half, we were disorganised but we controlled the ball better after the re-start. We have to improve in terms of possession.''

Juve are at the top of the Group A standings on three points, level with Olympiakos.

The Greek team played at home on Tuesday and won 3-2 over the side that finished runners-up last season, Atletico Madrid.

"It was important for us to start the competition on the right foot,'' Allegri said. "This is going to be a very complicated group. With Olympiakos having beaten Atletico, we will need to get many points to progress to the next round.''

The good news for Allegri was that Tevez ended his European goal drought. The former Manchester United and City forward had not scored in the Champions League since 2009.

"I hadn't missed scoring in the Champions League,'' he said post-match. "I always play as though this was my last game. We needed to win this match. The media claims that we have an easy group but considering last year's experience, we know that this is not the case. Our aim is to qualify for the next round.''

Juve, who won just one of their six games last season to crash out of the competition in the group stages, travel to Madrid to face Atletico on Oct. 1.
