Benedikt Howedes to miss Schalke trip to Chelsea as injuries mount

Schalke will without captain Benedikt Howedes for their trip to Chelsea as their defensive injury problems mount.

- Howedes hopes Schalke can rise to Chelsea challenge

The club confirmed on their official website on Tuesday that Howedes is set "to miss the next few matches" after he was flown to Munich, where Germany team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt assessed his hip injury.

Schalke are already without Cameroon international Joel Matip and Brazilian defender Felipe Santana for the game at Stamford Bridge.

Jan Kirchhoff may be available but he has spent the last two weeks on the sidelines with a tendon injury, and Schalke boss Jens Keller told DerWesten on Tuesday: "The question is how much he can play through the pain."

Schalke have Kaan Ayhan, 19, available but may have to pair him with 18-year-old Marvin Friedrich, who played in the Bundesliga for the first time in the 4-1 defeat at Borussia Monchengladbach at the weekend.
