Adnan Januzaj scores hat trick, Luke Shaw plays for Man United under-21s

Luke Shaw and Adnan Januzaj stepped up their attempts to earn a place in the Manchester United side by impressing in front of a watching Louis van Gaal as the club's under-21s beat Sunderland 4-0.

Januzaj, who is yet to start a game under the Dutchman, scored a hat trick as United's second-string side emulated the first XI, who beat QPR 4-0 on Sunday.

Left-back Shaw played the first half as he continues his quest to regain fitness after missing the start of the season with a hamstring injury.

Manager Van Gaal said on Friday that the England international was fit enough to play for some of a match, but not the full 90 minutes.

And he opted to select another summer signing, the Argentina international Marcos Rojo, at left-back against QPR instead.

Shaw, who became the most expensive teenager in world football when he cost 27 million pounds from Southampton, was an unused substitute.

Januzaj came off the bench to replace Angel Di Maria when United's record buy got cramp but has seen his chances of first-team football reduced by the arrivals of the Argentine and Radamel Falcao.

Andreas Pereira, who was also on the bench against QPR, scored United's other goal in the Sunderland game, while Anderson was the most experienced player in the lineup.

Meanwhile, United are mourning Sandy Busby, son of their former manager Sir Matt, who has died.
