Former Arsenal striker Bendtner told German football magazine kicker that he believes some of things he has said had been misinterpreted to his detriment.

The 26-year-old Denmark international joined Wolfsburg in August after his Gunners contract expired, and said: "I could have signed for other clubs earlier, but I waited for the right one.

"It all happened quickly when VfL approached me. [Coach] Dieter Hecking and [sporting executive] Klaus Allofs had questions, and I had questions, and in the end we agreed a deal.

"Wolfsburg finished the last Bundesliga season in fifth position, and narrowly missed out on Champions League. The club has great ambitions, and I also have them."

Asked about past controversies in his career, Bendtner said: "I regret nothing."

"Not everything that has been written is true," he added, explaining that quotes attributed to him that he would become "the best attacker in the world" were not correct.

"Back then I said that I believe that I'll be able to tap my full potential, and if that was enough to make the best attacker in the world it would be fantastic," he said. "Everyone should have that goal, be they a footballer or a mechanic. The wish has to be to get better all the time.

"The best attackers in the world score 20 goals every season. I need to achieve that first before I talk about it. My best time starts now."
