Gabriel Agbonlahor: We aimed to frustrate Liverpool and it worked

Gabriel Agbonlahor and Philippe Senderos hailed a resolute defensive effort as Aston Villa once again came away from Liverpool with an upset result.

Agbonlahor's scrappy early goal was enough to give the underdogs a 1-0 victory as Villa claimed their second win at Anfield in three years.

Villa, who are now unbeaten at Liverpool in four encounters, were predictably on the back foot for much of the match after scoring but they held on, with the Reds restricted to just one shot on target, despite having 75 percent possession. And stand-in captain Agbonlahor admitted it was the visitors' aim to leave Liverpool chasing the game.

"We came here with tactics to frustrate Liverpool and try and nick a goal, and they came off perfectly for us,'' he told Sky Sports 1.

Senderos had to marshal the defence in the place of the unavailable Ron Vlaar and was keen to pay tribute to a team effort that thwarted Liverpool.

"Not many teams will come here and get a win. We showed a lot of character and I thought it was a brilliant performance from everyone,'' he said.

"From Gabby up front, I thought everybody did their job brilliantly. We showed some brilliant character, everyone was fighting and until the end, we hung on and it was a brilliant win for us.''

Agbonlahor's goal capped a superb week for the Villa frontman, who signed a new four-year deal with the club on Wednesday.

"It wasn't the best of goals but I think you take them in the Premier League when they come. It's nice to top off a really good week for me,'' he said.
