Guus Hiddink 'livid' after Netherlands throw away qualifier to Czech Republic

Netherlands coach Guus Hiddink said he was "livid" after a defensive blunder gifted the Czech Republic a 2-1 victory in Tuesday's Euro 2016 qualifier.

The Dutch had been pushing for a winner in Prague when defender Daryl Janmaat attempted to head back to his goalkeeper in stoppage time, only for his touch to rebound off the post, allowing Vaclav Pilar to tap home and seal victory for the hosts.

Hiddink said he had stayed away from the media for some time until he could calm himself down after the defeat.

"I was livid," he said, in quotes reported by Soccerway. "That's why I stayed away for half an hour.

"If you cannot win, you must be sure that you will not lose in any case. Then you should not be so stupid as to give a goal away."

Janmaat accepted responsibility for his error, telling Dutch broadcaster NOS: "It's my mistake. I can't put it right."

New boss Hiddink, who took over for Louis van Gaal following the Netherlands' run to the World Cup semifinals, has lost his first two games is charge following a 2-0 defeat to Italy in last week's friendly.

He went back to a 5-3-2 formation against the Czechs, but switched to the traditional Dutch 4-3-3 system before halftime after they had fallen behind.

"When you make mistakes like that, then it is very difficult," he said. "Whether you play football with four or five defenders, it does not matter if you're so naive defending. That second goal we completely gave away."

Dutch captain Robin van Persie also lamented his team's late defeat.

"After making it 1-1 we were in control of the game and had chances," he said. "It's very bitter when you concede the winner so late."

Pilar said his goal had given the Czechs exactly what they had been looking for, adding: "We wanted to win -- that was our goal. The three points are extremely important for us."

Czech coach Pavel Vrba said he would have been content with a draw before the late and dramatic winner.

"Three to five minutes before the end of the game, I would have taken a point," he said. "All my players tackled well and gave good individual performances. I can't single anybody out because it wouldn't be fair to the others."
