Gary Cahill: England have drawn a line under World Cup disappointment

Gary Cahill believes England are ready to move on from their World Cup failure after a 2-0 victory over Switzerland in their opening Euro 2016 qualifier.

The Three Lions exited this summer's World Cup at the group stages after picking up just one point from their three games in Brazil, but a brace from Danny Welbeck in Basel on Monday night boosted their hopes of reaching the European Championship in France in 2016.

Chelsea defender Cahill -- who impressed with a last-ditch clearance to deny Josip Drmic an equaliser in the second half -- thinks that Roy Hodgson's side can now look beyond this summer's disappointment to better times ahead.

"We know about the disappointment in the summer but we draw a line under that now and move forward," Sky Sports reports Cahill as saying.

"I don't think the criticism will be blown away. It is going to take time but it is a great start.

"In the period of two games we are not going to change everyone's opinion, but certainly I hope it is not all doom and gloom.

"I hope there are a few happy faces around. I think we deserve credit for this game and we are looking forward to next month."

While new Arsenal signing Welbeck scored twice on the counter-attack, Cahill believes goalkeeper Joe Hart -- under criticism following a run of poor form -- should be praised after making two outstanding saves from Swiss forward Haris Seferovic as the hosts piled on the pressure.

"In the last two games, when called upon Joe has produced some important saves for us," he added. "He has been fantastic."
