Jan Vertonghen close to new Tottenham deal, says agent

Jan Vertonghen is on the verge of signing a new Tottenham contract, according to the player's agent, who also suggested that the defender is likely to move on if the club fails to qualify for the Champions League.

Vertonghen, 27, has four years remaining on his current deal after joining from Ajax in 2012, but has often been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane.

The Belgium international's representative, Mustapha Nakhli, claimed earlier in the summer that his client had attracted interest from several clubs, with Barcelona reported to have been among the potential suitors.

However, Nakhli has now told Sky Sports that Vertonghen is close to committing himself to Spurs once again and is enjoying life under Mauricio Pochettino.

"We have spoken to Daniel Levy about a new contract for Jan and the negotiations were very good -- we hope to sort everything out very soon," he said.

"He is happy at Tottenham and wants to play for the club. He wants to play Champions League football with Tottenham and he has a very good feeling about the new manager.

"Last year they made many changes and brought in many new players and it was not so good, but this season it is possible for Tottenham to qualify for the Champions League."

Nakhli did, however, warn Spurs that Vertonghen may look to move on should the club fail to qualify for Europe's elite club competition this season.

"Playing at the highest level is, of course, very important for Jan," he said. "If Tottenham do not qualify for the Champions League this year then we will have to see what happens next summer."

Tottenham have not featured in the Champions League since the 2010-11 season, when Harry Redknapp guided the club to the quarterfinals.
