Atletico Madrid midfielder Tiago snubbed Chelsea return

Former Chelsea midfielder Tiago has confirmed he rejected the chance to return to the club this summer in favour of re-signing with Atletico Madrid.

Tiago, 33, first joined Chelsea in 2004 but spent just one season at Stamford Bridge before moving to France to play for Lyon.

He helped Atletico win the La Liga title last term, as well as finish runners-up to Real Madrid in the Champions League, but he was out of contract in July.

The Portugal international has now confirmed he was offered the chance to re-join Jose Mourinho at Chelsea for a second time before opting to extend his stay at the Vicente Calderon.

"The summer was very difficult. I want to explain to the fans what happened but there are some things I cannot explain because they are not important," he told AS.

"At the end of last season, I received a great offer [from Chelsea] and it made me think about making a change. But I realised that the most important thing was to feel important at a club.

"I spoke to Cholo [Atletico boss Diego Simeone] and he told me he wanted me in the squad in the next training session. From then, I could only think of rejoining Atletico and wearing this shirt again.

"I am happy and grateful to everyone and to the club for having me back. I will give everything on the pitch to return their efforts."
