Manchester United broke the Premier League record by spending 153 million pounds in the summer transfer window.

The 2012-13 league champions -- who broke the British transfer record with the 59.7 million-pound signing of Angel di Maria -- topped the previous highest sum of 140 million pounds spent by their neighbours Manchester City in 2009.
United's net spend of 125 million pounds was also the biggest recorded by an English club in one transfer window, while the 20 Premier League clubs paid a record 835 million pounds between them.
Besides Di Maria, United bought Southampton left-back Luke Shaw for 27 million pounds, Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera for 28.8 million pounds, Sporting Lisbon defender Marcos Rojo for 16 million pounds and Ajax utility player Daley Blind for 14 million pounds.
United, who had never previously spent more than 62 million pounds in a transfer window, also took Monaco striker Radamel Falcao on loan at a reported cost of 6 million pounds.
The Red Devils sold Danny Welbeck for 16 million pounds -- the third highest fee they have ever received -- along with Shinji Kagawa, Patrice Evra, Tom Laurence and Bebe.
City had spent 140 million pounds in 2009, when their purchases included Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor, Joleon Lescott, Kolo Toure and Roque Santa Cruz, and 130 million pounds in 2010, when they brought in Mario Balotelli, Jerome Boateng, Aleksandar Kolarov, James Milner, David Silva and Yaya Toure. City's net spend of 121 million pounds in 2009 had been a record.
Liverpool were the other club to top the 100 million-pound barrier this summer -- just the sixth time a Premier League club has spent a nine-figure sum in a transfer window following Chelsea's 2003 spree and Tottenham's 2013 recruitment drive.
The 117 million pounds Brendan Rodgers paid was a club record, although Liverpool's net spend was only 45 million pounds due to the lucrative sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.
Chelsea were the third-highest spenders of the window, paying 89 million pounds in fees, although their net spend was comparatively small because of the money they brought in for David Luiz and Romelu Lukaku.
Arsenal paid out 82 million pounds -- comfortably a club record -- as they signed Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers, David Ospina and Welbeck.
Other clubs to pay record amounts in one transfer window included Everton, Hull City and Southampton, although the Saints recorded the biggest profit in the division after selling Shaw, Chambers, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren.
