Arsenal apply for extension to complete Danny Welbeck signing

Arsenal have applied to the FA for an extension to complete the signing of Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck.

The two clubs have agreed a fee in the region of 16 million pounds for the England international but the deal was not completed by the transfer deadline on Monday.

The 23-year-old looks set to be pushed further down the Old Trafford pecking order following the imminent arrival of Monaco talisman Radamel Falcao and United have given the move the green light despite offloading Javier Hernandez on loan to Real Madrid earlier on Monday.

Welbeck spent his day at Arsenal's training ground, as he trained with the England squad at the Gunners base in London Colney.

Reports emerged earlier this month that Welbeck may be allowed to leave United in this transfer window, with manager Louis van Gaal determined to build a side capable of challenging for honours.

Arsenal's North London rivals Tottenham were also believed to be keen on a move for Welbeck, who has scored 20 goals in 92 Premier League appearances, but it seems that he will be the man to replace the injured Olivier Giroud at the Emirates and satisfy the growing discontent from Gunners supporters.
