Aston Villa bid for Real Sociedad's ex-Real Madrid attacker Sergio Canales

Aston Villa have made an offer for Real Sociedad attacker Sergio Canales, sources at Villa Park have told ESPN.

Villa boss Paul Lambert has remodeled his squad this summer without a major financial outlay, with the arrival of Aly Cissokho from Valencia for a reported two million pounds and the capture of Colombian midfielder Carlos Sanchez for a deal close to five million pounds the two biggest acquisitions of this summer.

The arrival of ex-Real Madrid star Canales would be a major addition for Villa, who have started the Premier League season in impressive fashion after collecting seven points from their first three games.

Canales only joined Sociedad in the last transfer window in January, but Villa believe they can strike a deal to sign him ahead of Tuesday night's deadline.

Meanwhile, Villa have moved to dismiss suggestions that their club skipper Ron Vlaar may be leaving the club, with Manchester United and Arsenal linked with a move for the centre-back who starred for Netherlands at this summer's World Cup finals.

"He's the captain of the club, we've not had a call, nothing at all," stated manager Lambert. "No one will be leaving."
