There has been regular speculation throughout the summer suggesting Arsenal are keen to sign Carvalho, and sources have told ESPN FC that the Portugal international is keen on a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking to the Portuguese press after Sporting's 1-1 draw with Benfica on 1-1, he said he was happy in Lisbon but did not rule out a transfer.

"I am under contract with Sporting and I'm a Sporting player," he said, according to A Bola. "There is no way I can say I am going to leave. I am fine at Sporting."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said on Friday that he would be "actively involved" in the transfer market on deadline day but told reporters after Sunday's 1-1 draw with Leicester that he could not guarantee anyone would be brought in.

"I don't want to promise you what I am not sure to hold," he said. "I've worked long enough in England to know I don't like to promise what I'm not 100 per cent sure of as it doesn't depend on me."
