Liverpool considering move for former Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes

Liverpool are considering a move for former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes to provide extra competition for Simon Mignolet, sources have told ESPN FC.

Valdes, 32, is currently recovering from a torn cruciate knee ligament, and is not expected to be fit before November at the earliest.

But the keeper can be signed outside the transfer window because he is a free agent, having left the Camp Nou when his contract expired in June, and sources have told ESPN FC that Liverpool are prepared to give him time to prove his fitness before going through with a deal.

Mignolet has been the undisputed first-choice at Anfield since arriving from Sunderland for nine million pounds in June 2013. The Belgium international played in all 38 of Liverpool's Premier League games last season, with back-up Brad Jones appearing only in FA Cup ties.

Pepe Reina, who was first choice before Mignolet's arrival, spent last season on loan at Napoli and was sold to Bayern Munich on Aug. 8.

Valdes, a graduate of Barcelona's youth setup, first indicated in May 2013 that he was planning to leave the Nou Camp.

He has been out of action since tearing his cruciate knee ligament during a league match against Celta Vigo in March, and injury which kept him out of contention for a place in Spain's World Cup squad.

Rodgers has told the media he may bring in another signing but is focused on offloading players.

"Players will mostly be going out rather than coming in," he said. "Maybe one more will come in. A few boys have been told they aren't going to get much game time so they have been given that respect early on to help themselves find a club."

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has indicated that he is still interested in signing striker Fabio Borini from Liverpool, a deal that remains incomplete more than a month after the two clubs agreed a fee of 14 million pounds.

"I know how people feel but unfortunately we cannot give you all the information, all the true information on why he's not with us," Poyet told reporters. "I know from the outside it looks like it's him not wanting to come to Sunderland because of whatever, but I can promise you it's not like that.

"Now I keep it open because he's still a Liverpool player, and maybe he can still become a Sunderland player."

Centre-back Sebastian Coates has been linked with a loan move to Sunderland, Napoli are reportedly interested in midfielder Lucas Leiva, while winger Oussama Assaidi and Spanish forward Suso are also available for moves.
