Hernandez has agreed terms over a loan move to the European champions, according to Spanish sports daily AS. He would become the third Mexican to sign for the Spanish giants after forward Jose Luis Borbolla and legendary striker Hugo Sanchez.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs this summer, including Valencia and Juventus, but is set for a move to the Bernabeu where he would most likely provide backup for France striker Karim Benzema. In the last five seasons, no player in Europe's five major leagues has scored more goals as a substitute than Hernandez's 14.

Mexico boss Herrera appeared to confirmed the move via Twitter late on Sunday evening.

"Going to Real Madrid is a big opportunity for [Hernandez], for whom I wish the best of success."

Later on Monday, the final day before the summer transfer window closes, Hernandez posed for pictures at Real's Valdebebas training complex before undergoing a medical.

Despite making an instant impact upon his arrival at United in 2010, Hernandez has struggled for first-team football in recent seasons, with new manager Louis van Gaal preferring Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie up front.

Hernandez was a feature on the bench during David Moyes' ill-fated tenure at Old Trafford and has not seen much game time under Van Gaal this term.

During the 2013-14 season, the striker played just 855 minutes in the Premier League and 1,435 minutes in cup competitions, scoring nine goals overall.

Under Van Gaal, Hernandez has played just 45 minutes so far in the league and one full match in the Capital One Cup -- United's 4-0 humbling at MK Dons.
