Manchester United not after William Carvalho, cool on Arturo Vidal

Manchester United have no interest in signing Sporting Lisbon's William Carvalho and are no longer planning to bring in Arturo Vidal from Juventus before the end of transfer window, sources have told ESPN FC.

The Red Devils have been monitoring Vidal, 27, this summer but have yet to submit a bid for the Chile international.

There were reports that United were about to make a 24 million-pound offer for Carvalho, 22, but the Portugal international is of no interest to manager Louis van Gaal, even though Sporting have reportedly reduced their asking price from 37 million pounds to 24 million pounds.

Carvalho was scouted extensively by Van Gaal's predecessor, David Moyes, but the United boss has since switched his attention to other targets, bringing in two midfielders in Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao and Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid.

While United have not contacted Juventus about Vidal, Van Gaal fuelled speculation that he is keen to sign the former Bayer Leverkusen player when, after Sunday's 1-1 draw against Sunderland, he said: "I like Vidal."

The Red Devils had turned their attention to signing the midfielder after completing the transfer of Di Maria from Madrid earlier this week.

However, the Serie A champions have always said they are keen to keep Vidal and United have yet to approach either the club or the player, perhaps being deterred by his knee problem.

"He's a fundamental player for Juve and he will stay with us," Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri told a news conference. "He feels good and is training. His knee must be managed and he will start as a regular."

Vidal himself also appeared to quash rumours that he is set to depart Juve for United before the end of the transfer window.

The midfielder wrote on Twitter on Friday ahead of the new Serie A season: "Ready to start the championship! 100% let's go Juventus !!!!!"

United have been in talks with Juventus about striker Javier Hernandez, who is wanted by the Turin side. They have also already dealt with Sporting when signing defender Marcos Rojo, so would have had the opportunity to talk to the clubs about Vidal and Carvalho if they had wished.

The Red Devils have spent 132 million pounds this summer on bringing in Di Maria, who cost a British record fee of 59.7 million pounds, plus Herrera, Rojo and left-back Luke Shaw.
