Tottenham signing Federico Fazio 'still a Sevilla player,' Jose Castro claims

Sevilla president Jose Castro claims Federico Fazio is still contracted to the Spanish club despite Tottenham unveiling the player as a new signing.

The Premier League club announced on Wednesday that the 27-year-old centre back had signed a four-year deal at White Hart Lane, while Fazio was introduced to fans ahead of the side's 3-0 Europa League win over AEL Limassol on Thursday evening.

However, despite Spurs reportedly paying an eight million-euro release clause for the Argentine defender, Castro says the money is not yet with his Liga side.

"As of today Fazio is [still] a Sevilla player, because he still has a contract with Sevilla which has not been rescinded," he told Estadio Deportivo. "The money has been deposited, but not in the club's coffers.

"I do not know what he is doing in England being presented, that is what I cannot understand, but for that we have a legal team who will study what they must do. It is not a satisfactory or desired departure. Tottenham have paid his clause [10 million euros], but he only goes when his contract has been rescinded."

Spurs sold centre-back Michael Dawson to Hull City on Tuesday before announcing the signing of Fazio, who suggested his own deal had been completed.

"I'm really happy to be here at this club, this great club with very good players. I'm really happy to be here," Fazio told Tottenham's official Twitter account. "I came to Tottenham because I think it's a very good team, a very good club with very good fans."

The 27-year-old joined Sevilla in 2007 from Argentine side Ferro Carril Oeste and went on to win the Copa del Rey and the Europa League with the club.

Fazio, who has gained two caps for Argentina, was part his nation's under-20 World Cup-winning side in 2007, while he also won Olympic gold in 2008.
