Bastia fan jailed for role in violence

A supporter involved in violence which left 44 police officers injured during the opening weekend of the Ligue 1 season has been jailed.

The unnamed Bastia fan was also handed a three-year stadium ban for his part in the ugly incidents around his club's home match with Marseille to open the French top-flight campaign on Aug. 9.

The man, who was suspected of throwing a barrier at police and was already under a suspended sentence for an unrelated incident, is the first to be jailed as a result of the violence.

Four others, aged between 20 and 39, had already been given suspended prison sentences ranging from six to eight months.
